Six Months with the Ursa Mini Pro

It may only be a tool, but it's the best tool I've ever owned. I've really enjoyed shooting with the Ursa Mini Pro, so much so, I've barely picked up my Canon C100 Mark II in the past few months.

My initial thought was that I'd use my Ursa to shoot narrative pieces and leave the run and gun stuff to my C100, but the more I shot with the Ursa, the more I realized it can handle the majority of shooting conditions I find myself in.

C100 Mark II vs Ursa Mini Pro

As a preface, I've only owned the Ursa Mini Pro for roughly a month as of this writing, but I spent a week on a feature with it. It only took one day of testing different codecs, frame rates, etc to understand how to use this camera. I've already started to develop some muscle memory of where the different buttons are located.

On the other hand, I've owned the C100 Mark II for over a year, and I use it almost daily. I've shot close to 100 videos with it.

HOW DO I GET THE FILM LOOK?

STEP ONE

Let's start with a fact that we know to be true - images with a shallower depth of field look more cinematic. So let's make sure we are shooting with a fast lens and using an aperture that is as close to or is wide open - f/2.8, f/2.0, f/1.8, f/1.4 - is a great place to start. (Don't have a fast lens - buy a nifty fifty from Canon for like $125 - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1143786-REG/canon_0570c002_ef_50mm_f_1_8_stm.html
