Six Months with the Ursa Mini Pro

It may only be a tool, but it's the best tool I've ever owned. I've really enjoyed shooting with the Ursa Mini Pro, so much so, I've barely picked up my Canon C100 Mark II in the past few months. 

My initial thought was that I'd use my Ursa to shoot narrative pieces and leave the run and gun stuff to my C100, but the more I shot with the Ursa, the more I realized it can handle the majority of shooting conditions I find myself in.

When I started MONSTRINTHEDARK in June of 2013 I was still working full-time as an elementary school teacher living in Queens, NY. For years I had been working as both a teacher and freelance DP/editor, taking advantage of my teaching job ending mid-day, as well as weekends, holiday breaks, and summer vacations. It gave me a lot of time to work on my craft and continue to support myself with a full-time job.

After selling my third feature film, Black Hat, to Amazon Studios, and then selling my first commercial, I knew it was time to move into filmmaking full-time.

Do Reels Have Any Value?

I've been cutting reels for awhile now - and I don't usually just cut one.

I'm more of a generalist - I do cinematography, direct commercials, edit, even do some VFX work. I'll usually cut a showreel once a year with that years best work plus a few of my overall favorite clips. At the same time, I may cut a directing reel, a narrative DP reel, as well as a corporate reel so I have all my bases covered.
