Color Grading Ursa Mini Pro

I've posted a few other articles about working with the Blackmagic Design Ursa Mini Pro which I bought about a month ago and immediately used on a feature. I really, really like the camera and I'm dying to use it some more.

I tested the camera by shooting a lot of RAW 4:1 around my house but I'm not planning on sharing any of that because it is boring.

Coloring your footage used to be a thing you would hand off to a dedicated colorist and for good reason - colorists can make a huge difference in the way your film looks as they are masters at understanding and manipulating luminance and color.

Not every project can afford to bring on a colorist which is a shame - with a lot of filmmakers shooting log and raw footage from their digital cameras, there is definitely color work needed in post. 

I have personally struggled with color for years. I taught myself to color correct an image but creating a look for a film or having all my shots across a film look consistent was hard and at times frustrating. Working on short turnarounds probably didn't help any.

Get the Film Look with Your C100 Mark II



Let's start with a fact that we know to be true - images with a shallower depth of field look more cinematic. So let's make sure we are shooting with a fast lens and using an aperture that is as close to or is wide open - f/2.8, f/2.0, f/1.8, f/1.4 - is a great place to start. (Don't have a fast lens - buy a nifty fifty from Canon for like $125 -
